Coffee Shop Music Playlist
Should you be pleased or disappointed if your song makes it onto a coffee shop music playlist? A question that occurred to us whilst realising we hadn’t noticed the music playing in our local Costa until ‘The Kooks’ – She Moves In Her Own Way’ dropped in.
Now as songs go it’s a decent enough indie pop tune, big enough in its day to suggest that its not just nondescript elevator music that makes the final cut. So what if your record made the Costa Coffee music playlist (all other brands of coffee are available). Pleased…not so much?
Truthfully our default disposition is that we wouldn’t want our cool underground hit to be considered as beige cafe music. Music that is ultimately selected to blend into the general thrum of mindless coffee shop chitchat. Yet as label owners my commercial head says – ‘8 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, 2,000 plus stores in the UK’ – ka-ching! You could even argue that making a coffee shop music playlist indicates you’ve made it… But is it the kind of made it you’d be pleased about.
So if you found your music to be rubbing shoulders with George Ezra, Ed Sheeran and Jack Johnson, on your local coffee shop music playlist, should you be pleased that you’re a) well known and b) raking in the streaming dollars. Or should you justifiably be disappointed? Let us know in the comments below:
