Mixtape - Electronic DJ Mixes
Mixtape
The Mixtape is essentially what gave rise to the DJ. Originally recorded on reel to reel, then cassettes, CDs and now digitally, mixes have played a significant role in establishing some of the most iconic elements of club culture. Sasha & John Digweed, Ministry of Sound, Boiler Room and Fabric to name a few. Essentially it’s the business card of clubbing – it got us our first gig.

What is a Mixtape
A mixtape (alternatively mix-tape or mix tape) is a compilation of music, typically from multiple sources, recorded onto a medium. With origins in the 1980s, the term normally describes a homemade compilation of music onto a cassette tape, CD, or digital playlist. The songs are either ordered sequentially or made into a continuous program by beatmatching the songs and creating seamless transitions at their beginnings and endings with fades or abrupt edits [Wikipedia]
Whilst Wikipedia is technically correct, and many a mixtape adhere to these rules, to stop there is effectively only answering half the question – What is a Mixtape?
A mixtape, technical aspects aside, should ultimately amount to more than just the sum of its parts. The truly great mixtapes ‘Sasha & John Digweed – Northern Exposure, Todd Terje’s – Essential Mix or Honey Dijon – Boiler Room, to name a few, take those parts and sequence them in such a way that the listener is engaged, taken on a journey and is ultimately entertained. Too many mixes are just a technical exercise in sequencing tracks proficiently. Whilst this is important there is a danger that such a mix will fail to connect with the listener on an emotional level and ultimately end up forgotten.
A mix is a DJ’s calling card and if executed with precision and creative guile who knows where it might take you? Dont believe me, check the touring schedules of Job Jobse, Ben UFO and Jack Master. Why these guys? Well none of them have their own music to fall back on.
