We caught up with Sasa from In Flagranti in anticipation for his appearance at Blah Blah Blah this Saturday. It’s been a great year for them and we reflected on their history, their influences and where their future lies.

Blah Blah Blah: First things first, who are In Flagranti and how did you guys start making music together?

Sasa: In Flagranti are Sasa Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor. We started our music collaboration after a few disappointments, trying to produce other artists. We already have run the Codek label for a few years and decided to focus on one act only, which was our self.

Blah Blah Blah: How would you describe In Flagranti’s sound?

Sasa: A friend of mine wrote this which I quite like “In true Flagranti form, it’s an irreverent balance of sex, dirt, distortion, dance, beauty and tongue-in-cheek humor, all wrapped up in a gritty, 70s aesthetic.”

Blah Blah Blah: That’s seems to work well. You are both based in different continents, can you explain to us the working process you go through when making music together?

Sasa: Around 2000 I found this DAT tape with lot’s of random disco tracks and samples that Alex made a while ago and started to chop up bits and pieces and made some new tracks out of it, which we evetually released as In Flagranti in 2002. Alex then started to email me sound files on a regular basis that he just recorded from turntables or old mixtapes and I turned them in to tracks. After he moved back to Switzerland, we just continued that process. We never sat in the studio together. At the same time we really got into re-edits. Between 2003 and 2005 we emailed each other new edits almost every other day, it was very exiting. I would say thats when we really discovered our sound. I like this ping pong aproach. I make a track send it to Alex, he then edits the track around and sends it back to me. We do this until we both agree that it’s good, then we release it.

Blah Blah Blah: You famously use 70s porn for most of your artwork, was this a decision you made when you first formed or something that fell into place as you went?

Sasa: A far as I know it was not a decision, when you look at the fist record sleeve ‘Just Gazing’ the image just really complimented the name and sound. Then it developed out of that. Alex says “Growing up in the 70s, Igot to enjoy 70s culture first hand from tv, radio and magazines, that’s where I get my inspiration today.”

Blah Blah Blah: You are playing Blah Blah Blah this Saturday, what can we expect to hear from an In Flagranti DJ set?

Sasa: It’s generally eclectic, disco/funk/electro/rock/cosmic/punk/house
it also depends on the crowd, I don’t have a set that I repeat.

Blah Blah Blah: Do you prefer to play in US or Europe?

Sasa: There is no difference to me.

Blah Blah Blah: Do you feel with Alex living in Basel and yourself living in New York, you are able to bring different influences and ideas to the table when making music?

Sasa: We both lived in NY for a long time and I just moved to london. It doesn’t really matter anymore where we live. Our influences come from long time past. The ideas were already there when we first met. It was just a matter for the technology to be more accesible and of course internet.

Blah Blah Blah: Your music seems to have a timeless quality to it which is quite rare in electronic music these days, would you agree with that?

Sasa: I don’t know. If that’s how you hear it, then I guess that’s a compliment.

Blah Blah Blah: Are there any producers out there who are exciting you at the moment?

Sasa: There is so many, it’s hard to keep up.

Blah Blah Blah: What does the rest of the year hold for you guys?

Sasa: We will put out a couple more of the Sounds Superb series which is mostly re-edits and there is a new single, we will release after the summer featuring Natalie Smith who was on our last 12″ ‘Sexx Piss Tool’

Blah Blah Blah: Thanks Sasa, catch you on Saturday!
