Old School Hip-Hop classic: Deltron 3030 – Mastermind
“Today our new music discovery is actually a record from the year 2000. An old school Hip-Hop classic from Del the Funky Homosapien and Dan the Automator, aka Deltron 3030. Fans of Gorillaz 2001 debut LP should in particular enjoy this”…
Old School Hip-Hop: Deltron 3030 – Mastermind
Music discovery is an ever evolving past time. When younger there is a tendency to pick a side and deny all other genre possibilities. For us it was traditionally Indie and then House Music. For others it would have been Dubstep, Drum & Bass, or perhaps even Country, who knows. Whatever it was our formative musical preferences, whilst ardent, often lacked diversity. Particularly for those of us who were the eldest siblings, with parents who didn’t really listen to music. As a result what should have been well know to us in 2000 becomes a rather late old school hip-hop discovery.
‘Deltron 3030 – Mastermind’ is of the non-gangsta rap variety, although like all quality hip-hop records there is the usual underlying social commentary. In this case the blueprint is the fight against global corporations. However what makes this record particularly enjoyable is Del’s flow. A combination of cadence, his distinctive voice and non Oasis like rhyming choices all create a ‘hypnotic effect’. The beat is crisp and punchy, whilst the 2 bar main hook never looses its appeal. A record that undoubtedly went on to inspire Damon Albarn (aka Gorillaz).
