Maya Jane Coles biggest DJ on the planet? Hard to say for sure, but whatever your opinion she is most definitely Top 10, a fact that the last two end of year RA Polls certainly back, with her securing a 9th position in 2011 and a 10th in 2012. Maya has built an infallible reputation as both DJ and producer, crafting sets and music that effortlessly compliment each other. There has always been a contemplative vocal quality to her work, however this has never over stayed its welcome as Maya’s acute awareness of the dancefloor ensures there is always a pounding beat and infectious hook not far behind. Its this blend of introspection and a need to break free that seems to power Maya Jane Coles work, and together they enable the listener to fully immerse themselves in the music and trust its roaming yet purposeful course.

This is a proper Essential Mix, coming from Aus Music‘s founder and curator Will Saul. Preparation, personal edits, exclusive material, 3 months of planning and testing track combinations, Will Saul has a true passion for electronic music, not a vacuous need for hollow superstar DJ status, to Will this is music first and foremost.

Will Saul has been writing and releasing music since the early 2000′s and is undoubtedly influenced by the then waning Sasha, Digweed, Nick Warren, Dave Seaman progressive house movement. In both releases and mix composition Saul generally saunters into view as he wistfully explores his surroundings, however before long you’ll find him hurtling with great urgency toward the finishing line. Admittedly some of the early mixes dont quite gel as smoothly as what was perhaps hoped for, however as the pace starts to gather Saul hits his stride and for those among you, who have an attention span, you’ll be duly rewarded for your faith.

However it’s another mix that while really enjoyable is unlikely to go down in history as an all time great, however as we’ve said before not many do, which raises the question what mixes, if any, would you consider worthy of classic status?

For some Catz N Dogz might be a bit of a new phenomena, for others a well worn pair of comfy slippers, but whatever your disposition Catz N Dogz are trusted purveyors of slick, tight and crisp tech-house type beats, whether it be their own productions or cuts from their own label, Pets Recordings. As you would expect there isnt much variation from a solid 4×4 pattern, so dont expect wild ‘Atoms of Peace Essential Mix’ type flourishes, but what you can expect is well thought out seamlessly flowing house beats, that provide the perfect accompaniment to a pre-clubbing gathering. Their Essential Mix is unlikely to go down in history as an iconic mix, but how many DJ mixes truly manage that, but what Catz N Dogz have provided is a collection of tracks that clearly know each other well and together want to get you bouncing out the front door and into the night. Enjoy.

So Thom Yorke & Nigel Godrich took over the Essential Mix decks this weekend. We didn’t really know what to expect from this, other than it was going to be anything but straight forward beats. Thom Yorke’s latest solo project ‘Atoms For Peace’ has taken his Eraser template and stripped it down to its elemental parts creating a disjointed yet oddly mesmerising piece of electronica. For some ‘Atoms For Peace‘ might be a little to introspective, but for those of you, like us, who adore all things Radiohead AMOK and this mix are essential listening. However word of warning this mix is about music rather than mixing perfection, this is not seamless House and Techno, but who cares…..
