Burial - Street Halo EP (Hyperdub)

Burial is back with his first solo material in 4 years dropping the 3 track 'Street Halo EP' on Kode 9's Hyperdub, sparking rumours that a 3rd LP is in the making.

Both tracks are beautifully foreboding ethereal pieces of electronica built around dark and brooding bass and drums with shafts of light piercing through as distant voices echo, reverberate and crackle to life. Burial once again demonstrates why he has had such a profound effect on the development of electronic music and confirms his position as one of the most innovative and talented producers of the last 5 and a bit years.

The Black Ghosts - Water Will Find a Way

It has been a while since we last heard from The Black Ghosts, but they are back with a new single 'Water Will Find a Way' taken from the new album 'When Animals Stare', due for release May/June this year on Southern Fried Records. For those of you who dont know The Black Ghosts they first sprung upon us just as everyone was going a bit Electro/Fidget crazy, unleashing a number of electro-indie winners such as Any Way you Choose To, Repetition Kills You, and I Want Nothing. Despite the relative success of their first album they somewhat faded into the night, suggesting that The Black Ghosts was never meant to be more than a one off project, not so.

On first listen to the new single it would appear The Ghosts are in a slightly more laid back mood this time round. Water Will Find a Way is built around a 60's sounding cinematic string breakdown, a shuffling Jazz type drum pattern and a repeating classic piano riff, combining to give a sense of reflection. However despite these restrained moments you can hear the trademark electro horns breaking through the mix suggesting that this track may not fully represent the new Album.

Electronic Artist of the Week #7 - Kommune 1

Kommune 1 is a 23 year old UK producer who like many has been inspired by the Underground Bass scene that has emerged from under Dubstep's all conquering wing. As you would expect he lists Burial as a key influence but to stop there would be an injustice to this emerging artist. Kommune 1 also has a deep love and knowledge of Dance music's roots siting the likes of Frankie Knuckles, 808 State, Jamie Principle, Kraftwerk, Derrick May and Afrika Bambaataa as inspirations to his music, giving Kommune 1's early work a hybrid feel of old Skool House and Underground Bass. Although not as polished as say a Julio Bashmore or a Midland Kommune 1's early work is impressive for someone who has been producing for less than 12 months, and if he can continue to build on this early promise he wont remain un-signed for long.

Essential Mix Classic - Justice (2007)

Justice are back (Official) and therefore it couldnt be a more appropriate time for another Essential Mix Classic. This is Justice from June 2007, when Ed Banger ruled the air waves and everyone wanted to make un-hinged distorted electronic guitar based music. Those heady times seem a little distant these days, what with all the main protagonists either fading away, changing styles or simply not releasing anything. But lets not dwell on that 2007 was a good year, SMD gave us 'Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release', Digitalism - Idealism, Daft Punk the Alive Pyramid Tour and Justice the Cross, oh and we started Blah Blah Blah.

This mix is 2007 Electro not Techno perfectionism, therefore download, try not to think too hard and just press play.

New Single out April 4th 2011 / Album to follow later in the year....

Burial & Four Tet & Thom Yorke - Ego/Mirror

Burial, Four Tet and Thom Yorke have collaborated on the limited EP Ego / Mirror. This release has been limited to 300 copies, and judging by my furiously fruitless clicking is already all over eBay. The EP was first aired on Rinse FM last night and you can now hear each track in its entirety via the Rinse FM Youtube radio rips below. For me Ego stands out with its strong melodic hook breaking through the heavily atmospheric and distorted crackles and beats.

This is a fantastic meeting of 3 modern musical innovators and a release worth bidding on, should it come to it.

Justice - Civilization - Adidas Is All In (Advert)

Justice return April 4th 2011 with the single 'Civilisation', with the album to follow later in 2011. The new single has also been chosen as the musical backdrop for the new global Adidas advertising campaign. The video is directed by long term Justice collaborator Romain Gavras, who chose Justice to soundtrack the campaign.

I think you'll agree that both the video and soundtrack superbly compliment each other, and even if your're more Nike than Adidas the new Justice track hints at a potentially special second album........lets hope they can deliver much like their robotic peers did a decade ago in 2001.

Hanna - Music by The Chemical Brothers

You may or may not know but The Chemical Brothers have been tucked away between shows recording their debut movie soundtrack for the highly anticipated movie 'Hanna', an assassin movie staring Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. Movie plot aside the clips suggest that this movie will be a fast paced and tense action thriller, that will also take time to explore the lead characters dark and young personality. Our initial reaction based upon the clips below is that the Chemicals have potentially produced a stronger score than the recent Daft Punk effort, however we will reserve final judgement until we have heard the complete album and seen the movie.

Who's next - Justice, Prodigy? Let us know who you think could record an OST....

Munk - The Bird And The Beat (Album Review)

We've pretty much had Munk's album on repeat here at Blah Blah Blah since it was released last week. So it's about time we got our review on and told you why we've been enjoying it so much.

Stream excerpts of the album on Soundcloud.

Munk is Mathias Modica the multi instrumentalist and co-founder of Gomma records. The Bird And The Beat is his third album and provides a deliciously summery dose of disco influenced dance music. Instead of mining disco for samples, however, he's created 14 tracks that put something back into the genre.

The Bird And The Beat is, for the mostpart, a joyous melange of melodic 70s sounds lovingly replicated with a modern twist. Centered around pelvis-gyratingly funky bass lines and soft percussion Mathias drops in classic flanged guitars, latin and tropical disco influences and vocals. Over the 14 tracks he has enlisted 10 different girls from 10 different countries to contribute, as well as adding his own voice (like a vocal Hugh Hefner) to the mix. On top of vocal duties and production he has also opted to play every guitar, drum, bass, synth, piano, xlyophone and kitchen sink himself. It's an impressive feat and creates a real cohesion across the album. Each track is individually enjoyable yet sits smoothly within the record itself.

As much as The Bird And The Beat might owe to disco, its not just a strut across multi coloured dance floors. Here and there Munk slips seamlessly into Chicago House, Hip Hop, Italo and Pop and whilst the majority of the album will have you basking in imaginary sunshine next to your pretend swimming pool there are chillier moments. As might be expected of a Berliner, Munk's analogue synth lines occasionally drift into the deeper, darker realms of chugging dance music with the sultry, foreign-accented sirens taking on an eery quality. These tangents give the album just enough of a modern edge to keep it fresh and exciting and in DJs' set lists.

The Bird And The Beat is a thoroughly enjoyable listen both in the headphones and on the speaker stacks. It's melodic, relaxed and most of all, fun.

Tracklist
01. Can I Have Your Attention?
02. La Musica
03. No Moon (...over Kuala Lumpur)
04. Violent Love
05. Keep My Secret
06. Kitchen Call
07. Mira / Excuse Me
08. Mis Labios
09. Tipsy?
10. Marseille Macheta
11. Rue De Rome

Tensnake - 10Ten #02

Looks like something new from Tensnake, not much information on it other than the slightly vague track title and a genre tag which suggests this was recorded live. Either way this track has a strong summery Housey disco vibe, sort of track you could imagine gracing an Aeroplane mixtape or an Ibiza beach front bar.

Electronic Artist of the Week #6 - The 2 Bears

The 2 Bears are made up of Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) and Raf Rundell (Greco-Roman Soundsystem) and combined they make curious Indie-Electro House. Their EPs combine straight up dance floor Electro House Follow the Bear, Work it Out, Curious Nature, Be Strong alongside more emotive vocal led dance such as The Church, The Lunatic and When am I going to make a Living. On the whole these two styles work, however its the more grizzly synth led tracks that come to the fore, pushing the weaker vocal tracks into the background, having said this Midland's remix of The Church and TEED's remix of The Lunatic are superb.

Gold Panda - Marriage EP

For those who read our blog regularly will have noticed we are equally as likely to get sweaty on the dancefloor as we are to kick back to a quality slice of electronica, and the subjects of this post Gold Panda are amongst the finest exponents of this sound alongside the likes of Caribou, Egyptrixx, Fourtet, Mount Kimbie and others.

Gold Panda's debut album 'Lucky Shiner' topped many a 2010 end of year album chart and to further enhance the albums reputation they have just released the Marriage EP. Marriage in itself is a great track, however the EP also includes 4 remixes of which the Star Slinger Remix and Baths Remix really standout, and are both worth owning in their own right.

If you're new to Gold Panda we would also recommend checking the tracks Snow & Taxi's and Back Home
