WeAreBlahBlahBlah EP33 - Mixed Camel

Camel is someone we have been harping on about for quite sometime now and his production has littered many a Blah Blah Blah set. Hailing from Italy Andrea Maver AKA Camel has been bubbling under for a few years now releasing a number of fine EPs, remixes and mixtapes. This clearly insatiable appetite for music is also reflected in the breadth of his production, taking influence from Dub, Deephouse, Techno, Hip Hop, and effortlessly mixing an array of samples and sounds to create dance floor centric grooves and rhythms. His music is Deep, Driving and always evolving. Personal favorites include the Meltin Pot, Speakeasy and Jelly Jazz EPs.

Jelly Jazz is his latest EP and is released February 10th, check the exclusive preview below:

Electronic Artist of the Week #1 - Maxxi Soundsystem

'Electronic Artist of the Week' will become a new regular feature on the blog, with the sole purpose of highlighting what we believe to be some of the best emerging electronic talent. Some of the artists featured you may have heard of, but ultimately every artist featured will be in the early stages of their career.

So to get things started we have decided to look no further than our home town of Brighton, most famously the home of Fatboy Slim. Brighton for many years has produced a wide variety of internationally recognised artists both electronic and otherwise and the talent pool has never been better with the likes of Friction, Beardyman, Burns, Prok & Fitch among others all making waves in their respective genres and now we must add the emerging talent 'Maxxi Soundsystem'.

Maxxi Soundsystem started life as a Brighton seafront party keeping the town up to the freshest 21st Century disco house and now the the duo Sam Watts and Neal Lewis have taken their message one stage further with their debut release 'Criticize'. Criticize takes Alexander O’Neal’s 1987 track of the same name strips out the majority of the vocals and replaces them with a pumping main room groove and old skool 808/909 vibe. Although this is only their first official release they have already been played on Annie Mac's Radio show and have received rave reviews from every quarter, suggesting big things could follow.

Most Influential Electronic Albums - All Time

Recently I read a Q Magazine article on the 25 most important Albums of all time and was surprised to see only one electronic album included on the list, after a little more digging through various other lists it became very evident that electronic albums generally dont figure as highly as their 4 piece guitar powered counterparts. Probably on the whole a justified stance, when you consider that these lists discuss the likes of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Radiohead and the like, however it does neglect to consider the significance of Electronic music and therefore the following 'Chronological' list aims to address the balance.

Within the following list we have also included a few compilations that we believe played a key role in the development of certain genres.

1972 - Neu! - Neu!
1974 - Kraftwerk - Autobahn
1976 - Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygen
1978 - Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music For Airports
1981 - New Order - Movement
1988 - Techno - The New Dance Sound of Detroit
1991 - KLF - White Room
1991 - The Orb - Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld
1991 - Orbital - Orbital
1991 - Massive Attack - Blue Lines
1991 - Primal Scream - Screamadelica
1994 - Prodigy - Jilted Generation
1994 - Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman
1995 - Leftfield - Leftism
1995 - Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust
1995 - Goldie - Timeless
1996 - DJ Shadow - Entroducing
1996 - Sasha & Digweed - Northern Exposure
1997 - Roni Size Reprezant - New Forms
1997 - Daft Punk - Homework
1998 - Air - Moon Safari **
1998 - Fat Boy Slim - Right Here Right Now
1999 - Moby - Play
2001 - Daft Punk - Discovery
2003 - 2 Many Djs - As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt2
2005 - Soulwax - Nite Versions
2005 - M.I.A - Arular
2006 - Burial - Burial **
2006 - Skream - Skream!
2007 - LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
2007 - Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future
2007 - Justice - Cross

(** Added by popular demand)

We decided to stop at 2007 as its hard to say which electronic albums of the last few years will go on to be considered influential classics.

M.I.A - Bad Girls (Vicki Leekx)

I dont know about the rest of you out there but I found the new M.I.A album a little disappointing and hollow in places. This is not to say the album was a complete stinker as 'XXXO' and 'It Takes A Muscle' are real standout moments, but overall the album lacked M.I.A's usually expert blend of pop and individual craft and consequently it suffered critically. Despite all this M.I.A was straight back at us with her free NYE Vicki Leekx Mixtape featuring a number of never heard before tracks, including the excellent 'Bad Girls'.
