Hot City Feat. MC DT - Twist
One of favourite artists of the moment Hot City are back with another slice of dance floor garage mayhem, Twist. Featuring the vocals of MC DT, who you may remember from 'Pied Piper and the Masters of Ceremonies' hit - Do you really like it. Personally wasnt a fan of that tune, however DT's vocals compliment this tune perfectly, creating a fun dance floor vibe that doesnt take itself too seriously but will have everyone bouncing. File alongside DJ Zinc - Wile Out meets Artful Dodger.

Munk - Violent Love / La Musica
Munk and his label Gomma Records have been one of the more consistantly solid labels over the last 12 months releasing a string of quality indie-dance tracks that have been fueling many a BBB warm up slot over the last 12 months. Most notably on heavy rotation have been 'La Musica', 'Violent Love', 'Skinny Jeans', 'Baby' (Clock Opera Remix), and Le Le's - Breakfast (Mercury Remix).

Essential Mix - Basement Jaxx (2010)
Its fair to say that Basement Jaxx's light has dimished a little of recent years with their most recent albums 'Crazy Itch Radio' and 'Scars' not quite having the same impact as 'Remedy', 'Rooty' and 'Kish Kash', consequently it would seem that they decided to go back to their DJ roots for 2010, culminating in an a really enjoyable party centric Essential Mix.

House Music - "A Soul Thing"
House Music has been with us since the early 80's most famously originating in Chicago and Detroit, USA. Since the 80's House has become arguably the most prevalent and dominant source of Dance music in Clubs the world over, shifting through various hybrids but in the main combining a solid 4/4 beat with funky overtones and vocal refrains.

In recent times we have seen the emergence of Electro, Tech and Fidget House. These genres were off shoots from the more popularized commercial House and quickly resonated with a more underground indie audience, an audience including ourselves that shied away from the more the commercial melodic records in favour of heavy basslines, growling synths and a little wobble.
However it would now appear that we have come full-circle with both indie-dance artists and fans embracing whole heartedly the more commercial sounding house. With the likes of Boys Noize, Evil Nine, Riva Starr, Jesse Rose, Round Table Knights and Turbo Recordings all releasing House tracks, whilst the blogs are hyping the likes of Duck Sauce, Tensnake, Azari & III and Homework.
1. Boys Noize - Yeah
2. Tensnake - Coma Cat (Round Table Knights Remix)
3. Jesse Rose & Riva Starr - Start the Weekend
4. Evil Nine - Stay Up
5. Azari & III - Reckless With Your Love (Tensnake Remix)
6. Homework - I Got Two
House - "Is a spiritual thing, a soul thing"

Gold Panda - Lucky Shiner (Album Review)
On paper Gold Panda's debut has a lot going for it. A number of respected sources are touting it as album of the year, James Shaw of Simian Mobile Disco has manned the controls and it's receiving a plethora of comparisons to Four Tet and Caribou. We thought, therefore, that it was about time to check it out for ourselves.

'Lucky Shiner' is a patient album. It is the result of a patient life. Taking in influences from a two year period spent studying Japanese culture, language and history at the School of Oriental and Asian studies in Japan. It's loaded with family history, relationships and memories - inspired by everything from 'Marriage' to a field recording of Gold Panda helping his Grandma to push a wheelbarrow in the garden. It was even made in a patient environment, a two week house-sit over Christmas for his uncle and aunt in the idyllic English countryside. In relaxed sessions between walking their dog Daisy. It, therefore, requires a little patience in return and on repeat plays the listener can descend into its layers to reveal something truly worth the wait.
'Lucky Shiner's eleven tracks convince your subconscious to gradually perceive their masked features and subtle cohesion. Like a string of dreams disturbed occasionally by the fluttering of a sample or a restless beat. They wrap you in a blanket of reverb, vinyl crackle and distant chimes and pass by with little concept of time or cause leaving only the vaguest notion of recollection. Here, a snatched memory of a loved one. There, a vision of an eastern city you once visited or saw on TV or imagined. All just as likely to arrive in your consciousness without you travelling anywhere. Awareness of detail and concept increases as you become more comfortable with Gold Panda's surroundings but remain blurred around the edges. Attempting to inspect an individual phrase too carefully will cause it to shift imperceptibly under your attention, maintaining a comforting lack of distinction. You may notice that an acoustic ballad is missing its lyrics but actually it's just waiting for you to add your own narrative. The atonal twang of eastern instruments sat on western harmonies might register as odd. But delve into the paper lantern style cover art of fireworks over an aqueous city-scape or the evocative song names ('Same Dream China' / 'India Lately') and a hazy understanding returns. Some might pen this album as 'genre-spanning' but it's more genre-irrelevant, traversing between, electronica, techno and balladry under no pretense. If it sits within a certain genre for more than three and a half minutes you'd be none the wiser as 'Lucky Shiner' dispenses with formal song structures, lyrics and specific production techniques. It's a pale canvas awash with emotion and feeling yet leaves enough space for you to superimpose your own meaning.
Gold Panda has created a debut by travelling - both through time and across the world - so that you don't have to. The result is music that doesn't transport you somewhere else but makes you feel totally comfortable right where you are.

Made to Play - Re:Play (5 Year Celebration)
Jesse Rose's label 'Made to Play', announced a little while back the details of their latest compilation 'Re:Play' celebrating 5 Years of releases; featuring 10 brand new collaborations and remixes from the Made to Play collective and a extended retrospective mix from the head honcho himself. To follow this initial announcement Jesse has just released a 4 track teaser sampler, featuring new tracks from Riva Starr, Round Table Knights, Renaissance Man, Idiotproof and himself . All four tracks carry that distinctive Made to Play house sound, each with their own individual twist. Riva & Jesse's 'Start the Weekend' has un-mistakably gone for the Duck Sauce - Barbara Streisand angle, with a Disco Sample topped with a short vocal statement, Round Table Knights have continued where Calypso left off and produced another tropical bouncer that tips its hat at Riva's 'I was Drunk', Renaissance Man & Idiotproof have produced a more low key houser employing a filtered main riff with short vocal snippets and to finish is the slightly less distinctive All Stars track. All in all another excellent Made to Play compilation on its way.

Daft Punk - Legacy
I remember when the hype was building for the 'Discovery' album and the internet was awash with fake Daft Punk sounding tracks, and unsurprisingly the hype around the TRON release has been no different with many a false dawn over the last few months. There is no denying that Daft Punk are the master builders of hype and fevered anticipation, but I for one have got a little tired of this overly drawn out saga and upon listening to the most recent official clip (admittedly its only 20 seconds long) 'Derezzed' I am know a little concerned as to what to expect from the final soundtrack. Hopefully they can deliver on the hype with a seminal moment in movie soundtracks. The wait continues......

Having said everything above Im sure the free glow in the dark poster that comes with the pre-order of the album is bound to seal the deal for many a Daft Punk fan (see above).

BNR TRAX 01 Electric Rescue - Ambivalent
BNR TRAX is the new sub label for Boys Noize Records. The idea behind the new platform is to release everything digitally only and simply allow Boys Noize to release more experimental music at a higher volume, as he described in a recent interview "BNR TRAX follows a total different idea. Everything goes so fast and all DJs need a new banger every week to stand out from the others. BNR TRAX will bring you those tools without the long waiting time". While an interesting idea to try and save us all from repeated banger overload, one cant help but feel that increasing the production line will only reduce the quality of the output in an already overly saturated and diluted market. However Boys Noize is a trusted source and his first EP from Rex Club legend 'Electric Rescue' allays any fears of quantity over quality with a strong Techno led EP. All three tracks eb and flow through a swath of distorted electro, white noise, beeps, and vocal snippets all backed by a rolling techno beat.
Next up are one half of Shadow Dancer and Para One.

Battery Powered - Who Needs Love
Battery Powered aren't just fellow DJs from Brighton but they also contribute to this blog so it makes sense that we'd keep an eye on them when they started producing tracks. Their latest effort, 'Who Needs Love' has really caught our ear. They've created a house track that builds ferociously to a classic 80s vocal before dropping into a bouncing bass line. It's then tickled with snippets of the sample and topped with some peeping synths.

We look forward to hearing what's next from these guys.

Blah Blah Blah Meets - Chromeo
Thursday 24th September, we caught up with P-Thugg and Dave 1 otherwise known as the hottest export from Canada since the summer of 69, Chromeo, via a transatlantic hotline from Brighton to New York. With my speakerphone on and my iphone set to record I was ready to dispatch my well prepared questions to P-Thugg before being quickly re-diverted by P-Thugg himself to Dave’s Manhattan pad. Confusion aside and a few quick pleasantries left hanging in the air I called Dave 1.

Blah Blah Blah: Hello Dave, its Jonny Blah Blah Blah
Dave 1: Word Up
BBB: Right, straight in. Its been three years since Fancy Footwork, have you been letting the new stuff develop over that period or do you thrash it out when you decide its time to get back in the studio? What is the Chromeo method?
Dave 1: We toured for 3 years and then in the last year we got into the studio and started putting together the new album. We didn’t really get in the studio during those three years but little song ideas did begin to develop, P on his side, me on mine. Each of us map out our own rough ideas with P sending me loops of which 1 in 10 we will use, once we start working on one of those ideas together its usually a keeper.
BBB: I remember buying 'Me & My Man' on vinyl, which was a regular part of my set back then, how would you say your sound has changed since then?
Dave 1: Well on the new record I tried to give a more updated take on modern funk with synth sounds that the ‘Me and My Man’ track had. I mean that record wasn’t really thats 80’s sounding, like the Fancy Footwork LP. Certain songs on the new album I tried to bring that funk sound back with an updated twist….’Hot Mess’, ‘You make it Rough’, ‘Im not Contagious’, but with more orchestration, more vocal arrangements, more interesting things musically. With this record I wanted to diversify the spectrum of influences compared to Fancy Footwork with late 70’s sounding piano stuff ‘Don’t Walk Away’, ‘The Right Type’ and more atmospheric 80’s sounds like ‘Don’t Turn the Lights On'.
BBB: I remember reading that you delve into a lot of 70’s and 80’s vinyl for ideas, do you still seek out these records or is it that you have very much got that influence and that’s what you put into your records?
Dave 1: No no we are always listening to new records, before this album we were listening to a lot of soft rock, anything with Jeff Buckel playing drums, Boz Skaggs, Todo and Kenny Loggins, it all works its way in…
BBB: Kenny Loggins reminds me of playing Beach Volleyball with the boys...moving away from production to the live show, I saw you at Glastonbury this year and you dropped a little 80’s nostalgia with Money for Nothing, how do you plan your live shows and do you have any surprises planned for the UK tour?
Dave 1: Ummm, probably should start thinking about it, we don’t really plan in advance as it never really works, so we go by trial and error in the first couple of shows experimenting with song order until it gels and then that usually becomes the perfect set list for the tour.
BBB: Seems to work as everyone was getting involved and singing along at Glastonbury, how did you find Exit Festival?
Dave 1: It was amazing, 20,000 person sing along, I mean where our music stands out in the electronic music world is that we are song writers and therefore our music is not just about a crazy mosh pit or a massive dance floor record, like Momma’s Boy.
BBB: Yeh, Momma’s Boy is a great sing along anthem with a sense of humor, is the humor a conscious effort in your music or does it just happen naturally?
Dave 1: Yes it is, well it naturally happens, like for example ‘Don’t Turn the Lights On’ is not that humorous a record but that’s why we made a crazy video for it. You’ve got to always keep that humor in there.
BBB: Your unique style seems to draw fans from all electronic musical dispositions, you recently converted a friend of mine who is a huge Dubstep head…
Dave 1: Well yeh, that’s cool, I mean that stuff comes and goes, look at how many trends there have been in electronic music since 2004 when you bought our Rage single? We don’t care, songs are here to stay, we don’t follow the trends.
BBB: Right, last question…..you mentioned earlier in the interview a number of 70’s and 80’s artists who have influenced this record, are there any electronic artists, song writers in the present day who really stand out for you?
Dave 1: Stuart Price is killer, he’s the man, I like a couple of tracks off the Aeroplane record, Holy Ghost, Midnight Juggernauts of course!, La Roux I think is incredible, so yeh.
BBB: Stuart Price is the man, well thanks for taking the time to talk to us and we will see in the UK shortly.
Dave 1: All good, Easy.
