Blur - Fool's Day (Download)

As part of Record Day Blur sold 1000 limited copies of their freshly recorded new song Fools Day, their first material since 2003......sadly being a slightly obsessed Blur fan I was unable to get a copy on Vinyl, however Blur have kindly given the single away as a free download on their website. This has been available since midnight on record day, however I am writing this piece as I am getting increasingly frustrated with touts and having quickly popped on Ebay my annoyance has been renewed with the discovery that certain individuals are selling the record for up to £350 unplayed forcing true fans to pay ridiculous prices. Im not sure there is any real solution when it comes to music, but I still don't understand why ticket touting is not made illegal!!



On a more positive note this is a superb return from one of the UK's most important bands Blur - Fools Day (Click Here)

Todd Edwards - I Might Be

Todd Edwards began his musical journey around 1992 and since then he has remixed and collaborated with countless artists, including the likes of Daft Punk, Justice & the Klaxons. Todd Edwards is primarily considered a US house producer, however his work is often considered to be one of the key influences behind the British based UK Garage scene, and this new work is a timely reminder of 2-Steps roots as what seems like a garage rival continues to gather pace. With this in mind it is fitting to see a legend of the scene MJ Cole and a current musical pioneer Joy Orbison on remix duty....The package is complete with additional remixes from Ed Bangers Feadz and newcomers My Dear Disco.

5 Years of Dirtybird......

Dirtybird released its first record in Janaury 2005 but the idea began in 2002 during the production of “Intellect,” one of the most intensive studies on DJs and producers of house and techno music ever filmed. The Intellect dvd featured over 40 interviews with legendary producers from Juan Atkins, to Swayzak. Director Barclay Crenshaw created the concept of the label in order to supply tracks for the dvd soundtrack. In 2003, Barclay’s friend Christian Martin purchased a massive portable sound system and began throwing outdoor parties in San Francisco called “dirtybird.” The bird logo was derived from a sketch cartoon character Barclay had been drawing since he was 10 years old.

In 2005, “dirtybird,” the record label began releasing vinyl. At the same time, Barclay created the DJ alias “Claude Von Stroke” as a joke but the name stuck forever after the debut record “Deep Throat” sold through more than 11,000 vinyl copies worldwide.



Since that time both the label and the dirtybird party have enjoyed great success. Some classic records released by dirtybird include:

Uffie meets Pharrell

Its been a long-time since the excellent Pop the Glock, but Uffie is finally back and ready to release her debut LP 'Sex, Dreams and Denim Jeans' on Ed Banger Records. After her initial hype and success in 06/07 things went a bit quiet, with Uffie not quite delivering on her early promise, however Ed Banger supremo Busy P appears intent on not letting that happen again, and with collaborations with Pharrell and Madonna producing Mirwais behind the controls things are looking good for Uffie and 2010.

Beatport Music Awards 2010

Beatport have just launched their first ever music awards and having checked it out it makes some interesting reading. There are 36 categories altogether: Best Artists (separated into 18 genres), and Best Track (17 genres, with both originals and remixes), with a final open question asking the public to name the ‘most influential, relevant and forward-thinking person in electronic music over the past 12 months’, however all nominees are based solely on Beatport sales data from March 2009 - March 2010.

Fundamentally this makes logical sense, however having read through the list of nominees in each category you cant help but feel that these awards don't comprehensively recognize the music talent...... Whilst I can understand you cant argue with hard and fast sales figures I think I would prefer to see a system that asks you to vote for your top 5 artists, as the current setup can only really celebrate those that are commercially viable on Beatport and therefore doesn't allow you to vote for who you actually want to vote for, and ultimately restricts exposure for those emerging acts who deserve the recognition.

Having said all this I think this is a solid addition to the Awards calender and there is still plenty to vote for despite my reservations above.....

Treasure Fingers (Fools Gold) - 2010 Mix

Treasure Fingers recorded this mix in anticipation of him crossing the pond and embarking on an European Summer tour. Harking from Brooklyn New York and signed to A-Trak's Fools Gold label Treasure Fingers is one to watch out for if you like your House mixed with a strong slice of Disco and Funk. I can almost feel my eye's itching in anticipation of Summer.

My friends at Legendary Children kindly asked me to do a guest mix for them. I struggled with shortlisting a 1 hour mix and have ended up with a 30 track mix on 61 minutes of music - all (except for 3) are from between 1987 to 1991 ranging from acid, latin freestyle, industrial, early rave and a bit of Belgium. These are records that I have been crate digging in record shops and scavenging on discogs and ebay for years and borrowed from friends. This is a summary of why I would have loved to have been a teenager in the late 80s.

Bok Bok - Night Sluggin Mixtape

I find Bok Bok mixes to be a bit hit and miss, however I really enjoyed his recent mix for URB. Bok Bok has an eye for the more underground elements of various genres effortlessly blending them into a quirky mix of percussion, rhythms and leads.
