Major Lazer - Essential Mix

You all know probably know about Major Lazer by now so no need for a long intro on them. Diplo and Switch got together to record a truely schizophrenic mix for Radio 1's Essential Mix on Saturday. Taking an hour each Diplo starts things off with a few Dub and Raggae jams, before quickly descending into full Baltimore club territory. It's a good half an hour before we hear any Major Lazer's own work, but the mix builds nicely to all out club bangers with Switch taking over and keeping the tempo bouncing for the final hour. There's a few curve balls thrown in their to keep things slightly tongue in cheek in the form of Wamdue Project, Black Eyed Peas and Ace of Base. Overall it's probably one of the most eccentric Essential Mixes you are likely to hear and it definately sounds like Diplo and Switch are revelling in not taking things to seriously.

Blah Blah Blah Meets In Flagranti

We caught up with Sasa from In Flagranti in anticipation for his appearance at Blah Blah Blah this Saturday. It's been a great year for them and we reflected on their history, their influences and where their future lies.

Blah Blah Blah: First things first, who are In Flagranti and how did you guys start making music together?

Sasa: In Flagranti are Sasa Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor. We started our music collaboration after a few disappointments, trying to produce other artists. We already have run the Codek label for a few years and decided to focus on one act only, which was our self.

Blah Blah Blah: How would you describe In Flagranti's sound?

Sasa: A friend of mine wrote this which I quite like "In true Flagranti form, it's an irreverent balance of sex, dirt, distortion, dance, beauty and tongue-in-cheek humor, all wrapped up in a gritty, 70s aesthetic."

Blah Blah Blah: That's seems to work well. You are both based in different continents, can you explain to us the working process you go through when making music together?

Sasa: Around 2000 I found this DAT tape with lot's of random disco tracks and samples that Alex made a while ago and started to chop up bits and pieces and made some new tracks out of it, which we evetually released as In Flagranti in 2002. Alex then started to email me sound files on a regular basis that he just recorded from turntables or old mixtapes and I turned them in to tracks. After he moved back to Switzerland, we just continued that process. We never sat in the studio together. At the same time we really got into re-edits. Between 2003 and 2005 we emailed each other new edits almost every other day, it was very exiting. I would say thats when we really discovered our sound. I like this ping pong aproach. I make a track send it to Alex, he then edits the track around and sends it back to me. We do this until we both agree that it's good, then we release it.

Blah Blah Blah: You famously use 70s porn for most of your artwork, was this a decision you made when you first formed or something that fell into place as you went?

Sasa: A far as I know it was not a decision, when you look at the fist record sleeve 'Just Gazing' the image just really complimented the name and sound. Then it developed out of that. Alex says "Growing up in the 70s, Igot to enjoy 70s culture first hand from tv, radio and magazines, that's where I get my inspiration today."

Blah Blah Blah: You are playing Blah Blah Blah this Saturday, what can we expect to hear from an In Flagranti DJ set?

Sasa: It's generally eclectic, disco/funk/electro/rock/cosmic/punk/house
it also depends on the crowd, I don't have a set that I repeat.

Blah Blah Blah: Do you prefer to play in US or Europe?

Sasa: There is no difference to me.

Blah Blah Blah: Do you feel with Alex living in Basel and yourself living in New York, you are able to bring different influences and ideas to the table when making music?

Sasa: We both lived in NY for a long time and I just moved to london. It doesn't really matter anymore where we live. Our influences come from long time past. The ideas were already there when we first met. It was just a matter for the technology to be more accesible and of course internet.

Blah Blah Blah: Your music seems to have a timeless quality to it which is quite rare in electronic music these days, would you agree with that?

Sasa: I don't know. If that's how you hear it, then I guess that's a compliment.

Blah Blah Blah: Are there any producers out there who are exciting you at the moment?

Sasa: There is so many, it's hard to keep up.

Blah Blah Blah: What does the rest of the year hold for you guys?

Sasa: We will put out a couple more of the Sounds Superb series which is mostly re-edits and there is a new single, we will release after the summer featuring Natalie Smith who was on our last 12" 'Sexx Piss Tool'

Blah Blah Blah: Thanks Sasa, catch you on Saturday!

WeAreBlahBlahBlah EP18 (Bite This) - Mixed by Zombie Disco Squad

We are rapidly approaching our 20th mix anniversary and in the build up to this momentous occasion we have another fresh mix from Made to Play upstarts Zombie Disco Squad. Formed in 2006 Lucas Hunter & Nat Self are ʻZombie Disco Squadʼ the multi-talented production duo that are taking house music in their own unique direction. Taking influences from Baile Funk, African rhythms, Baltimore, Hip-Hop, the so-called fidget sound and making it sound fresh. You wonʼt find any cheesy gimmicks in their records but what you will find are tracks played by some of the most influential DJʼs and clubs around the globe. These boys have had tracks on Dirtybird and Made to Play and in recent times have had the pleasure of playing such seminal venues as Fabric, Hive (Zurich) and Panorama Bar (Berlin) the latter of which they are now residents.

Zombies say NO to: new rave, breaks, blog house, dreadlocks, slow computers, bad mp3s, crap promos, writers block, rollerblades, mens cycling shorts, sandals, rain, bad design, bandwagon jumpers (suddenly like disco?), ryan air, nazis, cheeky promoters, skins, cheapskates.

Click on the mix artwork below to download and listen to the mix.

Loop Preview

Brighton’s very own musical and digital arts festival Loop is nearly upon us and we’ve got a preview of some of the acts playing over the weekend as well as a run down of our LoopLate party at Digital.

The latest news is that the outdoor stage has been pulled from this year’s festival due to the unreliable UK summer weather. It’s a bit of a shame, however don’t fret, the line-ups have been moved to the Dome Concert Hall, which is a great venue. There are some truly great acts playing this year and here is a run down of who we are looking forward to.

Fever Ray

One of the hottest new acts of 2009, Fever Ray will be headlining the Corn Exchange on Saturday night. Fever Ray is one half of The Knife, Karin Dreijer, and her debut album has been hailed as one of the finest of the year by critics. We caught Fever Ray playing earlier this year at Sonar and if was an interesting show to say the least. The stage show might not have been spectacular as The Knife’s infamous Silent Shout tour, but Fever Ray still managed to create a haunting and visceral live experience. This is her only UK festival date this summer, and bravo to Loop for securing such a captivating artist.

Joakim and the Disco

Joakim’s full live band doesn’t tour very often, but we’ve heard great things about it. One of our favourite producers, Joakim has had resurgence after a quiet period. Last year he released an album collecting all his remixes over the years and it reminded us once again why he’s one of the finest producers in the world. He’s playing in the afternoon on Sunday in the Pavilion Theatre.

Now over to Ally from Micawber for a run down of his acts to look out for this weekend.

Plugs

That face, it looks familiar... well it is. Plugs, fronted by Does It Offend You Yeah? former member, Morgan Quaintaince, combine a fusion of DIOYY’s edgy rock/dance stylee with a sound more commonly associated with Hot Chip, Clor and bands a-like. Bands heavily reliant on programing and synthesizer panache can eventually drain on your ears, especially live, often falling in-between the no mans land between live music and the dance floor. This is not the case however with Plugs, who are certainly less Nathan Barley than DIOYY, with evidently more songwriting ability - my top pick for the festival.

Zomby

Micawber favourite, Zomby, will be joined on the Saturday night by Marie Anne Hobbs at Concorde 2. Zomby, (who’s sound has provoked this rather amusing piece of journalism from The Guardian, "Feeling wonKy: is it ketamine’s turn to drive club culture?") has a much more distinguishable sound than the name suggest and an even wider circle of fans, thanks to his genre-defining sound that has seen his records played across the music spectrum. Erol Alkan, Ricardo Villalobos through to Animal Collective (who he supports in New York later in the year) are smashing his tunes, who alongside other UK talent such as Rustie & Hudson Mowake, creating a scene I’m labeling, “the indescribables” (Blah Blah Blah: We've heard it called Aquacrunk which is rather catchy but totally stupid at the same time!)

You can also catch We Have Band & equally as impressive, Data Rock on the Saturday. While Esser and Solid Gold are the remaining picks for Sunday.

Check out Micawber for more preview of events from around the UK. They know their music!

Loop Late Preview

We've got together with Loop to once again keep the party going till the early hours after Loop 3.0. Featuring an eclectic line-up in our usual home of Digital, this is sure to be the perfect way to finish of a great day of live music. Last years party was an absolute roadblock and we are expecting the same this year!

Blah Blah Blah and Loop Presents Loop Late @ Digital

THE JUAN MACLEAN (DJ)
RITON
LINUS LOVES (Breastfed)
BLAH BLAH BLAH DJS

Saturday 11th July / 2200 – 0300

The Juan Maclean

Signed to James Murphy's ubiquitous DFA records, The Juan Maclean made 2009 his biggest year to date with the release of his sophomore album: The Future Will Come. A blistering combination of disco, acid house and dance funk; the two leads tracks "Happy House" and "One Day" have become quickfire dance anthems.

Riton

Throughout the last two years, Riton (aka Henry Smithson), has once again proved why he is considered one of the finest producers in the UK. With a chameleon like ability to shift his style to suit any production, Riton has spent the last year exploring the depths of krautrock under the pseudonym Eine Kleine Nacht Musik. Behind the decks Riton is a true force to be reckoned with recent mixes for Mixmag and Radio 1’s Essential mix under his belt.

Linus Loves

Co-owner of Breastfed records along with Mylo and Kevin Mackay, Linus Loves is the big-room, balls out electro guise of Duncan Reid. An active remixer and creator of club anthems such as “The Terrace” and “Night Music”, Linus is back in the studio again working on his follow up to his 2006 debut: “Stage Invader”.

Major Lazer - Hold The Line (Djedjotronic Remix)

If you don't know who Major Lazer are, then you must have been in a coma for the last few months or just an idiothole in general. Major Lazer is the production duo of Diplo and Switch. These two heavyweights have got together to create a dancehall album that has been getting crazy hype across the blogs. It's not like dance music was crying out for a dancehall explosion, however it does seems to have caught the imagination of DJs and dancefloors across the world.

We've got a great remix of "Hold The Line" by Djedjotronic. A former Blah Blah Blah guest and one of the hottest young producers around, Djedjo has created a more DJ friendly take (the original clocks in at around 156 bpm) that keeps the groove of the original but introduces a few interweaving synths lines.

Housse De Racket - Synthétiseur (Van She Remix)

A nice remix here from Van She who have been a bit quiet on the remix front for a while. Housse De Racket are an upcoming French duo who make poppy indie electro. The remix is classic Van She; heavy on the vocoder, tight live sounding beats and insanely catchy synth hooks. Probably not up their with their Klaxons or Feist remixes, but it's a good reminder of why they were considered some of the best remixers in electro a couple of years ago.

Matt Walsh Fabriclive Promo Mix

We are big fans of Matt Walsh. His stripped down acid and techno tastes have made him one of the most exciting DJs to emerge from the capital in recent years. Matt's been plugging away establishing himself as a resident of Bugged Out and a regular at London's best club, aswell as being taken under the wing by Tiga and signed to his Turbo record label. We are big fans of his mixes; he did a great WeAreBlahBlahBlah Mix for us earlier in the year which you can find here, and this one is no different. It features some exclusives in their including some fresh new offerings the Turbo crew in the form of Clouded Vision and Noob.

The mix is anticipation of the upcoming Bugged Out / Kill Em All night at Fabric on Friday 3rd July. There is also a cool interview with Matt Walsh to accompany the mix that you can check out here.
